The honest assessment first: you can earn money from railway photography, but rarely much and almost never quickly. Picture agencies pay amounts in the low single digits for standard subjects, and the market for railway photos is small. If you expect it to pay for the hobby, you are being realistic – if you are hoping for an income, usually not.
The more viable routes run through niches: illustrated books and specialist magazines, commissions for companies and transport associations, calendars, image licences for specialist publications. What they have in common is that they need subjects not everyone has – here, documentary completeness beats the single beautiful shot.
If you are thinking of turning it into a career, sort out the tax and legal side early: when an activity counts as a business, which rights to your pictures you give away and what personal image rights and house rules mean for using them.
