A spotting tour rarely fails because of the subject and often because of the ticket. If you want to take in three stations in one day, single tickets quickly cost three times as much as a day ticket or a Länderticket (regional day ticket for one federal state) – and they tie you to specific trains, which rules out any spontaneous extension at the spot.
The most important distinction is between the Flexpreis (flexible fare) and the Sparpreis (saver fare). The Sparpreis is tied to a specific train; if you miss it because the light was just right, it is lost. The Flexpreis costs more but lets you take any train that day. For spotting tours it almost always works out cheaper.
On top of that come the regional offers: the Deutschlandticket (Germany’s monthly flat-rate ticket for local and regional transport), Ländertickets, day network tickets from the local transport associations and, abroad, passes such as Interrail. Which one pays off depends less on the price than on how many changes you need in a day.
