Spotting in Croatia: what you need to know

Croatia operates a network that is heavily fragmented by the war of the 1990s and by the topography. The link between the interior and the coast runs over a mountain line with considerable gradients.

Photography is not restricted on platforms. In station areas with border controls towards Bosnia and Serbia, restraint is advisable.

Traffic is light, but the landscape is rewarding. A trip is especially worthwhile in combination with Slovenia, because the two networks connect within a few kilometres.

Zagreb has one of the most beautiful stations in south-east Europe, and at the same time one of the quietest. The 1892 station building dates from the era when the Orient Express stopped here – operations underneath today are modest, but the fleet is unusually long-lived.
