Spotting in Romania: what you need to know

Romania has one of the largest rail networks in Eastern Europe and a correspondingly varied fleet. Alongside modernised multiple units, designs that have long since been retired elsewhere remain in regular service.

Photography is permitted on platforms. CFR staff usually react with interest rather than hostility; this does not apply at border stations or in areas used by the military.

The Carpathian lines with their horseshoe curves and viaducts are the scenic argument for a trip. Journey times are long – plan your daily stages more generously than the timetable suggests.

Major junction stations

Main stations with high train frequency and many operators. Ideal for beginners: platforms are publicly accessible, departure boards make traffic predictable and the haul is high.

In return you have to accept long journey times, frequent delays and an involved trip from central Europe – plus a network that visibly shows its maintenance backlog.
