Spotting in Ireland: what you need to know

Ireland runs on its own track gauge of 1,600 millimetres, which outside the island is found only in Australia and Brazil. As a result the fleet is completely distinct and cannot be mistaken for anything on the Continent.

Iarnród Éireann allows photography on platforms without any special conditions. Freight has shrunk to a few flows; the focus is clearly on passenger services.

The weather changes quickly and often. If you plan a day at a lineside photo spot, expect several different lighting situations within a few hours – that is both an opportunity and a risk.

Main stations with high train frequency and many operators. Ideal for beginners: platforms are publicly accessible, departure boards make traffic predictable and the haul is high.
