Spotting in Hungary: what you need to know

Hungary is centred on Budapest, and the capital's three big terminus stations handle almost all long-distance services. MÁV's fleet mixes new acquisitions with vehicles from several decades.

Nobody objects to photography on platforms. At Budapest-Keleti and Budapest-Nyugati security staff are present, but they mainly keep an eye on luggage and how long people stay.

International traffic towards Romania, Serbia and Ukraine runs through Hungary and brings vehicles from several railway administrations into the country – that is the real reason to travel here.

Main stations with high train frequency and many operators. Ideal for beginners: platforms are publicly accessible, departure boards make traffic predictable and the haul is high.
